Coventry can lay claim to being the 8th largest city in the
UK. The city centre based campus of Coventry University makes Coventry a
student city.
There is plenty of things to do, whether you are into music, sports, art,
fashion, or even just into socialising, there is something for everyone, and
the city based campus of Coventry University puts you in the heart of city
centre culture.
Musically, Coventry is coming into its own at the moment. The Enemy really did
something for the local scene and some good quality bands have emerged since
their arrival. You are never short for live music venues in Coventry, The
Kasbah plays host to some big names, The Charlatans, Calvin Harris and Kate
Nash have just played the venue with some brilliant local support acts such as
my next tip for the top, Echo Empire.
The Ricoh Arena showcases the bigger bands such as the mighty Oasis, Red Hot Chili
Peppers and Take That, while smaller venues come alive at night with the
excellent local bands, be sure to catch a gig at Escape, Dogma, The Tin Angel,
Taylor Johns, The Golden Cross or Inspire Café Bar (which is an old catholic
church turned into a bar!).
If clubbing is more your thing, never fear, Coventry has many night clubs you
can choose from, on Monday most students go The Kasbah where it’s just
50p a drink, Tuesday Dogma Bar has a great offer where EVERYTHING is half
price, then onto Carey’s or Jumping Jaks after, Wednesday Lava & Ignite
have a big student night, Thursday is all about the SU and you can be sure to
have a good night if you go anywhere on a Friday or Saturday, my personal
favourite is to catch a band at Escape and get a kebab from one of our many
takeaway and go home and sleep the gin off!
In the day you can go shopping in a busy pedestrianised city centre where you
can expect to find all the big high street names. If its food shopping you are
after, be sure to go to Sainsbury’s, based in again in the city centre, next to
the bust station. If you are a bit strapped for cash, buy local at The Indoor
Market. If all else fails, Birmingham is only 20 minutes away and a London is
only an hour away.
There are several restaurants, Dogma is famous for its burgers and steaks, The
Noodle Bar literally give you a bucket of food for about £6, and if it’s a ruby
you are after, we have many Indian restaurants.
If sports is your thing you can go and watch CCFC loose at the Ricoh Arena,
watch Coventry Blaze ice hockey team win at the Skydome Arena, take a dip in an
Olympic size swimming pool, play golf, go ice skating, join the university gym
(you may get free membership depending on what student halls you live in).
Coventry also boasts 2 cinemas, 2 bowling complexes, a free motor museum and a
free art gallery. The Godiva Festival is an anually free festival with a big lineup of music and culture.
Hello I am Steve. The music man for Studyvox. I am studying Creative Industries Management at Coventry University. I enjoy university, eating crumpets with beans and brown sauce on them, going to gigs and lazing about at home playing Xbox360 (not all at the same time). Steve-O
